NGU Football Finishes Strong
Evan Harper, Staff Writer
With playoff hopes gone, North Greenville football closed out their season against Short University and went out with a bang. This was the best game the Crusaders have played this season, offensively and defensively. In the first quarter, North Greenville held shorter with no points allowed in their first two possessions and continued to play great defense. They went on and had the best quarter of the year by scoring 21 points in just the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the defense continued to stand out by holding Shorter under 10 yards for five straight drives. The Crusaders also held them under 90 yards the whole first half. Offensive wise, the rush game for North Greenville worked tremendously with two touchdowns from Cale Swift and EJ Humphrey.
In the third quarter the offense continued to pound away as the touchdowns continued. Kaelan Riley threw two more touchdowns to Doug Washington and Andrew Yates. By the fourth quarter the lead was 46-0 and there was still more time to play. With the Crusaders beating Shorter with a final score of 56-0, there was excitement for a lot of new players on the stat sheet.
Sophomore Landon Spooner finished the game with four tackles and a sack. Freshman Yavin Smith also scored his first touchdown which was a nice short six-yard play. The defense had quite the standout day with Alex Watson leading the team with seven tackles on the day. Shane Amerson, Zeke Stringer and Kwame Livingston also all had sacks as well. This was by far North Greenville’s best game of the season. The players also plan to carry their momentum into next season with their heads up high.
