Are you hungry? Here are some food hacks for dorm life

Food options here at North Greenville are open to every student, regardless if they commute or live on campus. For example, students may choose to eat at the Café, the campus Chick-Fil-A, the Place, or even Tigerville Café right across the road.

However, there’s something different about food made in a dorm because it takes some serious creativity to make certain meals in a dorm room. These food shortcut recipes make the best funny stories to remember, but will most likely not do after graduation.

Skyler Vicino, a Junior here at North Greenville, lived on campus her first two years of being a student here, but now commutes. When she lived on campus, she had a mini fridge, microwave, a mini waffle maker, and a coffee maker. When asked if she had any odd food hacks that she would only do in a dorm, Vicino said, “My favorite thing to make in my dorm is Cinnabon roll waffles. I would put the Cinnabon rolls in my waffle maker. In seconds, I would have a Cinnabon mini waffle with coffee every morning. So delicious. I totally wouldn’t make them like that if I had an oven.”

Another Junior, Katherine Palm who still currently lives on campus has mastered a coffee hack that is something every iced coffee lover should know about. Iced coffee makers tend to be expensive. Sometimes, we don’t have time to get up and go to Starbucks every morning for iced coffee. Palm said that her shortcut was to, “at night I’ll make a cup of coffee and I’ll let it sit in the fridge overnight so it can be an iced coffee the next day.”

Taylor Susie, senior, describes how she prefers to eat out and see people rather than stay in her room to eat. But whenever she wants a midnight snack, she uses her mini fridge and microwave to heat up some Healthy Choice meals, soups, and ramen. Susie admits that she has used her roommate’s coffee pot to make Ramen once, and she even puts mayonnaise and sriracha in her chicken Ramen. Susie said, “Don’t knock it until you try it.”

All interviewed students had one thing in common. They all mentioned that this dorm food talk really makes students miss their mom’s homemade cooking. Making food in a dorm room can be a sport for using one’s resources. From meals, snacks in-between classes and just food to munch on while doing homework, making food in your dorm is more convenient than having to go out and spend money with a time crunch. Besides, most college kids don’t really have the type of spending money to eat out or buy a bunch of groceries everyday. Knowing how to make a quick bite can help students since college can be time-demanding, and it can be hard to find time to cook a meal. So, try these hacks next time you’re in need of something quick right before class.
