The evening of February 12 saw students from varying majors and years come together in the name of productivity.

From drawing maps of the brain on a whiteboard to learning how to cite in Turabian to solving complex calculus, students and tutors gathered in rooms outside the library to take part in eating snacks and studying at the Center for Student Success’ (CSS) study night.

Academic support coordinator Amanda Arvay said that the goal for CSS is to “be more consistent, be more visible and to make more connections.” Arvay hopes to give students stability in knowing that they will have a consistent place to study with others and get help from tutors if needed. Frequent study nights also give tutors more of an opportunity to make connections and have a visible presence on campus.

In determining how to best go about setting up the study night, Arvay shared how when she was a student, “it was really helpful to have a place to go where actual studying was happening.” This inspired the concept of a welcoming space full of people ready to help with any subject needed.

Arvay said the goal is to have each study night be focused on certain subjects or content. For example, the Midterm Midnight Madness on March 3 will be a more writing-focused session to prepare students as they head into midterm papers. They hope to have several other monthly sessions focused on specific subjects and end the semester with another Finals Frenzy where tutors for all subjects will be available.

Sophomore accounting major Avery Shope said she believes that the study nights are and will be beneficial to the students who choose to participate. Shope was at Monday’s study night as a math tutor. Several of her peers were there as tutors for a variety of other subjects such as earth science, psychology and Christian Studies.

If you are a student in need of a productive study atmosphere or looking for an opportunity to help out as a tutor, be on the lookout for information about CSS’s next study night.
