Finals are right around the corner–and coming in second behind them is the holidays. Students are tasked with getting in the Christmas spirit before leaving for winter break. It may seem like an impossible task, but with the events happening in the city of Greenville and at NGU, it’s going to be hard not to snap into the Christmas spirit.

For students trying to get into the holiday spirit in their dorm, graduate assistant Creed Taylor shared some things that he is doing this year to get into the Christmas spirit.

“This year I’m going to fully decorate my house. Living by myself, I just want to do something that brings me joy and Christmas decorating brings me joy, like I know I’m going to walk into my house and be excited,” he said.

For students on a budget who want to decorate, the Dollar Store, Target and Hobby Lobby have many affordable Christmas decorations under $10. Other places where students have found Christmas decorations on a budget are thrift stores like Miracle Hill and Goodwill.

Many of the events in Greenville to get you in the Christmas spirit started November 15 and will continue to the end of December or mid-January.

Ice on Main is an event sponsored by the United Community Bank that builds a temporary skating rink in front of the Courtyard Marriott for the holiday season. It is $10 for an hour of skating, but on Tuesdays, it’s $4.

The Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville Christmas market opened on November 24 and will go through December 31. On opening day, they will have a tree lighting ceremony and Santa in a sleigh from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This market is host to many local vendors, live music, holiday food and beverage and holiday activities. To view the market’s hours, you can check their website.

The Camperdown Plaza Christmas market is a fun event for any students staying in Greenville for Thanksgiving break. It’s a free one-day event with vendors, live music, silent auctions and holiday-themed activities. This is the third year this market has been held and one of the things that keeps people coming back is the new holiday mural they have painted. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For those who want to walk down memory lane, visit Upcountry History Museum’s “A Very Grinchy Christmas” exhibit. This exhibit is open from November 4 to January 21. It allows lovers of the animated special to get a special look at the work that went into breaking the creative standards at the time, which turned the animated movie into a holiday classic. Tickets for this exhibit are $12.

For students looking for events closer to campus, the Tigerville Christmas parade is December 2. It starts at 10 a.m. and proceeds will go to the Tigerville Fire Department. There will be food trucks and craft vendors and a competition for the best float and best ensemble. There will also be opportunities to take pictures with Santa after the parade.

One NGU tradition that students can look forward to is late-night breakfast in the Todd Dining Hall. Late-night breakfast is a great event for students to get in the Christmas spirit and take a break from studying for finals. There will be Christmas music, games and more holiday-themed activities.
