Striving for better service: The LiveSafe app at NGU

There is a new security measure available for all students called LiveSafe, and it can help get services from campus security and maintenance teams faster.

Chief Jeff Smith spoke about the app and its importance on campus.

“The LiveSafe app is a mobile phone application that is designed to help keep communities safe. It does so by allowing quick and responsive service to the student body, faculty and staff for emergency and non-emergency needs,” Smith said.

Once a student has joined the app, they have multiple options if they wish to contact campus security for any reason. The user can open the emergency options to call 911 or the security office.

There are non-emergency options as well, where students may send a message to the security office explaining their needs. The officers will receive the messages and respond accordingly. According to Smith, students are encouraged to call 911 for the best response times.

The LiveSafe app is a new way for campus security and maintenance plans to send alerts to students–and faculty as well. It has the capability of sending a mass message to users for alerts like the emails students and faculty receive.

“Users will receive pertinent safety information for campus in the form of text, push notification and email through the app. Students will also need the app to receive services like unlock requests, minor traffic accident responses, motorist assistance and more,” said Smith.

It is important for students to know that the LiveSafe app is required for minor services. Otherwise, for emergencies, 911 from a cell phone or 9-911 from a campus phone is acceptable.

According to Smith, the app will help security with response times.

“Through gathering statistics, our office has been able to improve patrol procedures and address reoccurring issues. It allows us to improve our response times and documentation of officer actions,” he said.

While the app is managed by security, there are options to submit maintenance requests on it as well. In the same way, maintenance will be able to respond better to students’ needs, as well as address common issues.

The maintenance department now has someone on call for after-hours service.

It is not required, but campus security widely encourages every student and faculty member to download the LiveSafe app. It is designed to help the school community, improve quality of security and make safety a number one priority overall.
