Free throwing intramural basketball into the mix: What’s new with intramural sports?

Casey Burton, Sports Editor

Fun Fact: Michael Jordan didn’t play basketball for his high school… So, who is North Greenville’s Michael Jordan? The new intramural basketball teams coming up may answer just that.

There are quite a few attributes that make up North Greenville University’s culture as a school. Anything that brings people together is strongly encouraged here at NGU. For example, intramural sports are a huge hit to the students, with so many different sports to offer.

One of the newest intramural sports just as beloved as the whole intramural program… basketball. There is a whole world of basketball here at NGU.

The amount of people who go up to the volleyball and basketball courts with friends to shoot the ball around is no joke. Not to mention all the hype and support from the student body at each of the crusader basketball games.

The two are finally being intermixed with a basketball intramural league. This is projected to expand the intramural program immensely because more people who never played or don’t want to play in college finally get the chance to become a basketball star after all.

The league will be 3v3 and each team will have the appropriate positions assigned by a team leader or captain. All the teams will play each other and have a championship to win the overall bragging rights and a picture on the wall of fame.

Bill Watson, director of intramural sports, said, “We have had a lot of requests for basketball for a long, long time now. We are all excited for this and I’m expecting a lot to come out of it.”

The point of intramural sports is to further unify the student body, and basketball has a huge chance of doing that. The high intensity of the sport is already a lot of excitement but also gives students the opportunity to play with and against their colleagues.

When playing on a legit competitive college level team, the players very rarely know who their opponents are, but when playing against friends is a whole different ball game. The sportsmanship and chemistry on the court will be better and the school spirit behind the teams will be something else for sure.

One way to ensure more student participation is listening to them about what they want. And the highly anticipated and requested intramural basketball is certainly going to cause way more student participation than any intramural before.

This is good because it will more than likely spread more people to be interacted with the organization as a whole. For instance, people loving to play with their friends on a basketball team will be more likely to form a team for other sports during other seasons like volleyball.

Another thing Billy Watson said, “If we need more sports and basketball doesn’t keep us too busy, we may add more sports, but student feedback would be crucial for that. If anyone on campus has any ideas or other sport recommendations just email us at Residents Life.”
