Humans of NGU: Dimitri Lucchese, a student who’s a cut above the rest

A nineteen-year-old voyaged overseas with hopes of learning the appropriate way to cut apart the human body.

This student traveled over 5,000 miles to America with hopes of one day becoming a surgeon near his home in Brazil as well as in America. This decision stemmed from the desire he had to ensure his family and those he loved were happy and healthy.

After coming to America for the first time at 16, he decided to pursue medicine as a career. His goal is to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology at North Greenville University and continue on to medical school after graduation.

Dimitri Lucchese discovered his love for medicine at 13 years old. “I want to work in a Brazilian hospital one day so I can help people that can’t help themselves,” he said.

Despite being forced to take a gap year after high school graduation due to Covid-19, he was finally able to begin the long winding journey towards becoming a surgeon as a freshman in the fall of 2021.

He chose North Greenville University because of its biology program offerings and variety of intense major-specific classes.

The department consists of six biology concentrations and currently holds a 90% acceptance rate to medical schools, making it a top choice for aspiring doctors. “At NGU, I have all the help I could need to succeed in my future career in medicine.” he said.

He dedicates more than three hours in the library a day to his studies to ensure his academic success. “Work smart and hard, nothing is truly accomplished with laziness,” said Lucchese. He found that the fewer hours he spent in the library studying, the lower score he received on assignments and exams.

Over the recent years, Lucchese’s desire to pursue medicine and help others has never faded. He knows his way around the hearts of his friends, family and those around him — quite literally, too.
