Taking no plays off is a mentality that NGU senior defensive back Aaron Watson holds close to his heart.

Watson is a proud native of Duncan, S.C. and attended Byrnes High School where he played football for four years.

It is there that his former strength and conditioning coach Michael Srock introduced Watson to Joe Novotasky, North Greenville’s current director of strength and conditioning.

That meeting would help bring Watson’s talents to North Greenville in the fall of 2017.

Watson began his freshmen season as a starter, playing in nine games.

In just his first season, he combined for a total of 16 tackles and two pass deflections.

There wouldn’t be a sophomore slump for Watson in the 2018 season, as he would dominate the Gulf South Conference, leading the conference in interceptions with six.

He would also have more than double the number of tackles from his previous year for a total of 33.

Watson was a threat to wide receivers in the conference, causing 14 pass deflections.

It was not just defense where Watson made an impact on a kick return as well, he rushed for 135 yards.

That same season, Watson rightfully earned All-Conference, All-Region and All-American Honors becoming one of the top defensive backs on the team.

Throughout Watson’s junior season he would continue his dominant presence on the field.

Once again earning All-Conference honors totaling 30 tackles, four interceptions, 11 pass deflections and 72 kick return yards.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 virus, there would be no 2020 season for Watson or any other collegiate athlete.

Thankfully, athletes were granted an extra year of eligibility. At this time, Watson is unsure of how he will use that extra year but is ready to go this upcoming season with a goal to win a ring.

Football is more than just a sport to Watson. His coaches and teammates have become like family to him.

Watson said his position coach Maurice Duncan and offensive coordinator Brad Robbins have been an inspiration to him. They have helped lead him in life both on and off the field.

One of his mentors happens to be his own teammate, senior linebacker Eddie Martin.

He has not only helped Watson develop as a football player but also helped him in his spiritual journey.

Watson said with the help of Martin, he is proud of the man he is becoming.
