NGU Footballs Aaron Watson Earns All-American Honors
Timothy Holcombe, Staff writer
Aaron Watson recently completed his sophomore season for North Greenville University. A season in which he ranked 12th in the nation in INTs with 5, tying a school record. Watson had 28 tackles in the season, 17 solo to go along with the 5 INTs. The Byrnes High School alum had an outstanding season, but it was about to get a lot better as he learned that he is a Don Hansen All-American for the 2018 season.
It was honestly crazy because I was in class at the moment when it happened. I just see everyone reacting on Twitter. I was happy and blessed to even be considered for it.
When questioned about what the award meant to him personally, he said:
Honestly here at North Greenville, in our program we put in a lot of work, so it is good to get the recognition that you deserve even if we did not do good as a team but individually striving to do better every day to help bring recognition to North Greenville as well.
When asked if at any point in the season did he think that being an All-American was a possibility, Watson stated:
No, honestly not until coach told me that I had tied the school record for interceptions with 5 right before the last game of the season. Then thats when I thought I could definitely be considered all conference player, but I did not know I had the opportunity to be an All-American.
Watson earned All-American honors in just his Sophomore season so with two years of eligibility remaining. Watson was clear on what his goals were for the season.
Definitely to try and bring a title here, a national championship to this program because the team that was in our conference just won the championship. They were good but we played them pretty tough so I definitely think we can bring a title here and to be an All-American again next year to continue that success.
When next season comes around Watson is looking to do more than just tie the record. Im definitely going to try to break my own record, thats just me trying to keep that mentality going just to keep striving to be better and honestly to just work towards my goal of going to the NFL.
