Men’s and women’s tennis recap

The North Greenville University men’s and women’s tennis teams lost this past Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, in a home match against Lenoir-Rhyne University. The NGU men’s team fought and ended with a 5-2 loss. The women’s team racked up 1 point for a 6-1 loss to the Bears.
Pierre Bedard (NGU) earned a win during a singles match against Josh Lazenby (LR) with results of 6-3, and 7-5. Bedard is a junior from Canada who transferred and previously went to West Virginia Wesleyan College. Doubles matches were also won by Bedard and teammate, Robin Van Der Heijde. They competed against Hamed Gandouz and Shane O’Dea coming out on top 6-4. Kaey- Den Tan and Francisco Tico (NGU) defeated Mauricio Hernandez and Josh Lazenby (LR) 7-6.
Individually, Bedard had a successful day with victories in both singles and doubles matches. Heijde won in a doubles match and had three games under his belt in singles. Den also had five games won in his singles match.
The North Greenville Women’s tennis team also had some success in the midst of their loss. Gala Castello defeated her opponent, Lulia Ponomareva of Lenoir Rhyne in a tie breaker match 3-6, 6-1, and 10-8.
Castello is a freshman international business major, from Barcelona, Spain. The only point for NGU was earned by Castello, who later competed in a doubles match with Jhovana Brena, but was defeated by Sanne Janssen and Emily Murchland 5-0.
Individually, Castello won her third match of the season with the victory of the tie breaker. Fernanda de Lucca came out with nine game wins after pushing through another tiebreaker match. Followed by Brena with six wins throughout the day.
The next matches for the men’s and women’s tennis team will be in Spartanburg against Wofford College on Feb. 26.
