NGU athletes awarded by Conference Carolinas

Several athletes have been named Conference Carolina players of the week at North Greenville University.

The athletes were chosen during week one, two and three of conference play which included the weeks of Feb. 5-11, February 12-16 and Feb. 19-23. The athletes that were chosen to be players of the week were Connor Grant for baseball, Austin Dixon for men�s lacrosse, Taylor Koon for softball, Kate Lee for softball, Rachel Kellogg for women�s lacrosse and Conference Carolina pitcher of the week was given to Amanda Coffrin for softball.

The athletes that were given these awards were nominated by each institution to the conference and voted on by league sports information directors that are based on performance for that week.

Taylor Koon was named the Conference Carolinas Softball Player of the Week for North Greenville University. She is a freshman elementary education major from Rutherfordton, N.C., and has led the Crusaders to a 3-1 week after batting .500 with five hits and five Run Batted In (RBI). Her best performance was a 2-for-2 game with two RBI in a 2-0 win against Anderson University.

Amanda Coffrin was awarded the Conference Carolinas Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 5 through 11. She is a senior early childhood education major from Mauldin, S.C., and was able to get some wins for NGU. In 14 innings of action, Coffrin had 15 strikeouts, issued nine walks and scattered four hits. When talking about the conference Coffrin says, �I think the conference is awesome. They�ve treated us well.�

Kate Lee was named the Conference Carolinas Softball Player of the Week for week three of play. She is a junior environmental science major from Gilbert, S.C. She posted a .333 batting average with four hits, including one triple and one home run, and four RBI to pace the Crusaders to a 3-1 record for that week. Her best performance was in NGU’s 7-1 victory over Carson-Newman, as she had a 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. Lee is currently ranked third in Conference Carolinas in both triples and home runs.

Rachel Kellogg has been named the Conference Carolinas Women’s Lacrosse player of the week during week three of play. She is a sophomore from Orlando, Fla. Kellogg had a highly successful game for NGU, scoring eight goals and having two assists for 10 points in an 18-8 win against Erskine.

Connor Grant was awarded the Conference Carolinas Baseball player of the week for North Greenville. He is a junior from Columbia, S.C., Grant produced seven hits, including three home runs and seven RBI with a .538 average to lead NGU to a 3-1 week.

Austin Dixon was named the Conference Carolinas Men’s Lacrosse player of the week for North Greenville. He is a sophomore health science major from Simpsonville, S.C. Dixon earned 13 points (10goals, 3assists) on the week to lead NGU to its first-ever 2-0 start in program history. In a 22-5 game, Dixon scored five times and had three assists to register eight points in the season opener. He would then score five more times in a 12-6 victory against Coker to close out the week.

Conference Carolinas is an NCAA Division II athletics conference headquartered in High Point, N.C. Member schools are in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The schools include Barton, Belmont Abbey, Converse, Erskine, King, Lees-McRae, Limestone, Mount Olive, North Greenville and Southern Wesleyan. Their mission statement is to provide a quality intercollegiate experience to student-athletes and use intercollegiate athletics to enhance the educational experience for all students.

The spring season of play for North Greenville athletics is heating up very quickly. Make sure to go out and support all the spring sports at North Greenville. The schedules for when they have games can be found online.
