At the beginning of each year, award shows become as common as finding spare change on the ground. There seems to be one every weekend and most people do not even know what the awards are for. Out of all of them though, the Oscars pose as the classiest because celebrities are not fighting to be relevant. Nonetheless, take a look at some of the highlights of the 2017 Oscars.

Before the show, everyone stepped on the red carpet and either made a statement, or had the paparazzi looking for someone else to take pictures of. Among the long list of celebrities, a few stood out in their attire. Actresses Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Hailee Steinfield and Janelle Monae all looked stunning in their dresses. None of it was gaudy and outlandish, but fit the theme of class the Oscars strive to present.

Some fan favorites became winners Sunday night for their respective categories. If you have seen any animated film in the past year, you probably have seen the animated short “Piper” playing in theaters. It won best animated short film for its theme of bravery and adaptation among birds. With a lot of competition, “Zootopia ” won the Oscar for best animated feature film.

The popular picture “La La Land” took away several wins including best cinematography and best original song, but the movie will be remembered after the shocking moment between it and respective film “Moonlight.” Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the award for best picture, but they received the wrong envelope, which had the card for best actress, Emma Stone. Dunaway called out “La La Land” as the winner, but the awkward moment ensued when they realized they had called the wrong name.

Although the host of every awards show has a script of what to say, there is always something to note about their delivery. Late night host Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars and did a decent job keeping viewers entertained. From putting his own spin on the show by including Celebrities Reading Mean Tweets and having candy rain down from the sky, there were also lackluster moments. Although every awards show has a political angle included, many hoped that everyone could celebrate directors and films without making jokes. Sadly, jokes about Trump’s wall were made and Kimmel even tweeted at President Trump saying, “Meryl says hi.”
