Six ministries to volunteer for over summer break
Georgia Gay, staff writer
As we count down the number of days leading up to summer break for most and graduation for others, it is easy to catch summer fever. It is so close yet so far. You can smell the summer breeze and freedom is almost within grasp.
However, something that should always be kept in mind is what can be done to better ourselves and our education. Volunteering is a great way to both enjoy your time off from school while helping you out and others in the end. Below are six different places to volunteer so that your summer is both enjoyable and productive.
1. Churches
Here at North Greenville University, it is a safe assumption that most students are involved in a church. Churches are great places to get in those volunteer hours. So for those of you who are regular church goers or have not notice that the Bible belt offers a church on every street corner, you are not too far from great opportunities.
2. Daily Bread Ministries
This Greer soup kitchen has a mission to feed the hungry by providing one hot nutritious meal a day to whoever comes and to help end homelessness in the Greer community. Today, over 150 meals are being served. They have 112 people volunteer each week and are always looking for more. There is always something to do like helping out in the kitchen, keeping up with the grounds or simply providing food donations.
3. Western Carolina Rescue Ministries
Their mission is to provide rescue, recovery and restoration in Jesus name. They always strive to address each of the three components in a productive manner. Western Carolina Rescue Ministries is aimed at helping the distressed in western North Carolina and is always looking for a helping hand. So for those of you in this area, the ministry is not far and needs a gracious helper.
4. The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church whose message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God and its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to help those in need. Not too far from NGU is a Salvation Army located on 417 Rutherford St. in Greenville, S.C.
5. Anderson Interfaith Ministries (AIM)
Its goal is to assist those in the Anderson community struggling with a number of issues. AIM is known for doing a lot with a little and continues to significantly help its clients positively change their lives long-term. Volunteers are vital to this organization and you can sign up to help out on their website.
6. The Wilds
This Christian camp near Rosman, N.C. is always looking for either summer volunteers or even weekend volunteers. Their goal is for the children to have fun doing all sorts of camping activities while implementing practical spiritual guidance. So for those of you who dont mind the camping lifestyle while helping lead children closer to God, then this a great opportunity for you.
