The North Greenville University men’s tennis team had been having its best year in program history but is struggling as of late.

This week the Crusaders would suffer their third and fourth straight loss to Pfeiffer University and Young Harris College on April 6 and 8.

“The season has been good. Even though we are playing tough teams this year and some division one schools, the record doesn’t show the reality because most of the matches we lost were really close,” said team member Sérgio Araújo.

Against the Pfeiffer Falcons, the Crusaders would fall 6-3 and would bring their Conference Carolinas record to 6-3. NGU led the day 2-1 off of a doubles play from Sérgio Araújo and Jose Gomez winning 8-6 and Santiago Robles and Alejandro de la Torre winning 8-6 as well. Singles play would struggle with the only individual match win coming from Edmundo Torres with a tough 6-4/4-6/10-4 win.

NGU would then be overpowered by the Young Harris Lions 8-1, with the only match win coming from singles play by Sérgio Araújo with a 6-1/6-1/7-6 win which, at the time, gave the Crusaders a chance for a comeback putting the score at 4-1.

The team remains optimistic to finish the season strong and is looking forward to playing in the Conference Carolinas Tournament two weeks from now with good expectations. The future outlook of the team for next season seems to be on the right path.

“I believe that our best year is going to be next year, with new players and the current players will have more experience,” said Araújo.

The Crusaders now have an overall record of 7-11 and are on a losing streak of five games. They will now look forward to playing at Presbyterian College on Friday, April 10 at 6 p.m. and following that is the team’s senior day while hosting the last home match of the regular season on Tuesday, April 14 at 3 p.m. against Limestone College.
