Social media, for the most part, tends to be a more informal way of talking with people and getting the latest updates of happenings. Up until recently, any news or communications coming from leaders of the free world used to come from radio, newspapers or television.

Social media has changed all of that. The public can now receive unprecedented comments, statements and casual tweets from the President of the United States.

Some would say this casual approach to news from our Commander-in-Chief is inappropriate, unprofessional and diminishes the respect other world leaders have for the office. Given Trump’s outspoken mistrust of the press, it is understandable that he would want to circumvent them and speak directly to the people. So, what exactly has the President been saying in his short but sweet updates?

With a substantial amount of exclamation points, ALL CAPS and spelling errors, the following are 7 noteworthy tweets from Trump’s 2017:

1. FAKE NEWS

President Trump made a statement mentioning the New York Times, CNN and NBC as “FAKE NEWS media” and ended the tweet with “SICK!” only to delete the post moments after and send out a new tweet removing “SICK!” and adding ABC and CBS into the list of the accused.

“The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!”

2. Covfefe

On May 31st 2017, Trump’s tweet was an instant internet sensation. Why you ask? Because it made absolutely no sense. Even with this tweet being deleted only nine hours after he originally posted it, it remains the president’s third most retweeted post of 2017.

“Despite the constant negative press covfefe”

3-4. Covfefe follow ups

A merely six hours after the covfefe tweet was sent, Trump quickly tweeted out two follow-up statements addressing covfefe.  No matter how brief the tweet was live, the phrase was printed on t-shirts and turned into memes and it’s meaning still remains a mystery today.

“A cleanup on aisle covfefe.” And “Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’ ??? Enjoy!”

5. Bad dudes

This was Trump’s reasoning to why he rushed to sign the travel ban without second thought. He didn’t want ‘bad “dudes”’ rushing into our country.

“If the ban were announced with a one week notice, the ‘bad’ would rush into our country during that week. A lot of bad ‘dudes’ out there!”

Trump sent more than 2,500 tweets over the course of his first year in office. This kept his security team busy to say the least. Some would say that Trump was too quick to tweet about information that was more feeling rather than fact.

Some claimed some of the information was misleading, in that it was coming from the President without the backing of evidence. Nonetheless, most days Trump’s daily tweets provided multiple headline material for news outlets.

6. DEPLORABLES

On the one year anniversary of his win in the election against Hillary Clinton, Trump tweeted his congratulations to all “deplorables”.

“Congratulations to all of the “DEPLORABLES” and the millions of people who gave us a MASSIVE (304-227) Electoral College landslide victory.”

7. Wire-tapping

At one-point Trump baselessly accused Obama of wire-tapping Trump Tower during the 2016 election.

“Terrible! Just found out that Obama had ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”

What do people think about Trump’s tweets and do they have favorites? NGU senior Kevin Clark said,  “Trum’ps tweet about Michael Wolff is great, but what’s even more hilarious is @HamillHimself’s replay to that tweet. I laugh every time I look at it! “Michael Wolff is a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book. He used Sloppy Steve Bannon, who cried when he got fired and begged for his job. Now Sloppy Steve has been dumped like a dog by almost everyone. Too bad!”

Trump asked the crowd at his inaugural ball, “Should I keep the Twitter going or not?” though it seems he had no plans of stopping no matter what the public said. Trump’s tweets have sometimes brought about confusion and chaos. Others have been taken as insults to certain groups of people. Whatever your opinion about this new way of speaking to the people, President Trump seems to think it is a valuable tool in this new age of communication.
