Clery Act: How North Greenville’s crime stats stack up
Jazmyne Boozer, Assistant Editor
We all know that overall, North Greenville is a very safe campus. But just in case you need some extra data to back that up, campus security has released the Annual Security Report (ASR) on the NGU homepage under campus security.
Under the Clery Act of 1990, every college campus that receives federal funding must submit an ASR every October 1 and must include the previous three years. This act was made so that colleges were more transparent about their security protocol, reports or problems with students and their guardians.
So how does North Greenville stack up against Furman University and Bob Jones University?
North Greenville University
North Greenville had zero cases in murder, non-negligent manslaughter, negligent manslaughter, non-forcible sex offences, robbery, motor-vehicle theft, arson, domestic violence, dating violence, liquor law arrests, drug law arrests and weapons law arrests in 2016.
North Greenville did have one case of aggravated assault and four cases of burglary on campus and in the housing. Our campus had a significant decrease of liquor law violations referred for disciplinary action from 2014 that reported 15 cases to 2016 that reported three.
Much like Bob Jones University, there were zero reports of hate crimes in the past three years. North Greenville also had two weapon law violations referred for disciplinary action and five drug law violations referred for the same thing.

In the grand-scheme of secular schools, Furman University’s reports also illustrates a fairly safe campus. Furman did not report any homicides or negligent manslaughters.
Furman also can report a zero for robbery as well as incest and statutory rape. Other than that, Furman has at least one case in every other category.
One issue that seems to be a trend on the Furman campus is rape. In the year 2014, 91 percent of college campus reported zero rape cases and in 2015, 89 percent did the same. In both of these years, Furman has had at least three cases.
Not only this, but motor-vehicle theft is a huge issue on the campus. Numbers are down from 2014 which had 17 cases. Furman can report a decline from 17 cases to 9 cases in the 2016 school year. Overall, VAWA offenses (Violence Against Women Reauthorization ACT) are low and on the decline on this campus.
