Banned Books in America

In celebration of Banned Books month here are a few popular novels that have been placed on the list throughout the last several years. Surprisingly, several of the outlawed books have even been taught here on the North Greenville University Campus.
Harry Potter (series), by J.K. Rowling
Many parents have requested the series to be banned from schools due to glorifying witchcraft and misbehavior. In the 2000s it remained in the top 10 most banned books.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky
The book was named by the American Library Association’s list as one of the most frequently challenged book, and has been banned from more than two school districts.
Gossip Girl (series), by Cecily von Ziegesar
The book series was banned first in 2008 and then in 2011.
The Giver, by Lois Lowry
Between 1990-1999 “The Giver” was ranked 11th on the most banned books
Captain Underpants (series), by Dav Pilkey
Ever since the series came on the scene parents have been challenging the series for it’s controversial elements including offensive language and violence.
Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell
Some critics believe the novel to be sympathetic to racism and promotes mistreatment a sympathetic outlook on “Confederate” morals.
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
Considered to be one of the best novels in the 20th century, “To Kill a Mockingbird” and had a 12 year ban until 2013.
The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Challenged due to “language” by the Baptist College in Charleston and is in the top 100 of banned books.
