Sports Briefs: The World of Sports

There’s never a dull moment in the world of sports; from March Madness, NBA playoffs starting up, Hockey and the chance for the Stanley Cup, the MLB is back, the exciting NFL offseason, and all the way to our backyard of North Greenville University.
College Basketball
In college basketball, the Villanova Wildcats are champions of the college basketball world. Villanova, the unlikely victor, pulled off an upset in a unlikely fashion. The Wildcats beat the No.1 seeded North Carolina Tar Heels on a buzzer-beater three shot by junior forward Kris Jenkins. A tight game in Houston it was. This is the second championship in the powerhouse’s history.
NBA

The NBA playoffs have begun it has been nothing short of their slogan: “Where amazing happens.” LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are out for blood in the sweeping in the opening round against the young and gritty Detroit Pistons team. The Warriors have claimed the NBA record for most wins in a season (73-9), but now they face trouble as their superstar in Steph Curry has gone down with an ankle and knee injury and will miss major time. The Clippers are the third favorite to win it, but within the same game they lose both of their superstars: guard Chris Paul with a broken hand and forward Blake Griffin with a quad injury. Both players are done for the remainder of the playoffs. The Clippers are a team that can’t seem to shake the “playoff curse.”
NFL
Although the NFL is not in season, the offseason moves seem to keep them in the light. Patriot QB Tom Brady’s four game suspension for the “Deflaitgate” scandal has returned; it’s been 67 weeks since the whole ordeal happened. While the Panthers are favorites to return to the Super Bowl with all returning players from last year’s roster except one, one who happens to be a vital key in their game plan. Late last week, the Panthers lost All-Pro corner Josh Norman. Both sides weren’t able to come to an agreement, causing Carolina to release him. Within a day, the lockdown cornerback was to the Washington Redskins for a deal of $75 million.

The sports world is great right now, even in our own backyard of North Greenville. The NGU baseball team is making history, the squad has been on a tear all season with a 35-14 overall record and a 21-6 record in the conference; the best record in the program’s history with the conference.
