5 gifts to surprise your mother with on Mother’s Day

Mother’s day. The day we celebrate our moms and make sure they feel appreciated.
If you are anything like me, you haven’t done the best at keeping in contact with your mom. I get it. You are in college and between eating, sleeping, studying, friends and trying to hold on to the ever-fading concept of a love life or at least a decent GPA, calling mom isn’t always the priority. The good news is Mother’s day is the perfect opportunity to make up for that through gifts. So make it count.
Here are 5 ideas to get you started.
What are her Hobbies?
You should always start by thinking about your mother. What are her interests or hobbies? Once you have that in mind, it isn’t too difficult to think about a gift she could use to enjoy her interests. If she loves to read, try getting her a book lamp or a kindle, or even a gift card to a bookstore. If she likes to bake, get her a baking sheet, pastry decorating bag or even an apron as the perfect gift. The reason hobby gifts are so great is that she will use it often and think of you when she does.
Does she collect anything?
Some of our mothers collect different items to decorate their house. A gift to add to your mom’s collection might be great, but make sure to casually ask her if she actually like them before you get it. When I was 10, I mentioned once I liked snow globes offhandedly, and I received at least two a year until I was 15. Trust me—just double check that it is something she wants to collect.
From the heart
Maybe you want to make something from the heart or you are just a college student and broke, either is motivation to make something homemade. Write a letter to your mom thanking her for all the things she has always done for you. You know all those things that you now have to do because you are an adult. You could even get up early and make her some breakfast. Anything works, but we are in college, so it isn’t really cute anymore if you give her a blob of clay that is supposedly a coffee mug, a handprint or anything with crayons.
Date Night
Take your mom on a date. This could offer the perfect chance for you to just spend time together. Get her tickets for an event: a concert with her favorite artist, a play or anything else she would enjoy. Go to brunch, a movie, shopping, whatever she wants as long as you are together.
If you are extra appreciative, try cleaning out the garage or attic. Knock off some of the things on your dad’s honey-do list.
Regardless of the gift you choose, remember the best gift you can give your mom will probably be just a decent grade on your finals.
