5 podcasts you should be listening to
Emily Artus, Staff Writer
Need a break? A brainteaser? A brush-up on history? Then maybe you need a podcast. Readily available for online streaming, podcasts are an often overlooked source of news, knowledge and entertainment. Here are five podcasts that we believe North Greenville University students should give a listen.
1. Stuff You Missed In History Class
Hosted by Tracy V. Wilson and Holly Frey, Stuff You Missed In History Class is perfect for when you need interesting facts for that last-minute history paper. Episodes like “The Schoolhouse Blizzard” and “The Honey War” present the quirky, bizarre side of history. This How Stuff Works production is a college student staple and proves learning is as easy as headphones in and unfolded laundry out.
2. The Sporkful
Fair warning, don’t listen to this one without a caf to-go box. Hosted by Dan Pashman, The Sporkful investigates culinary concepts and their origins, meanings and purposes. Interesting episodes include “Bonus: Should Bagels Ever Be Toasted?” and “What Makes a Sandwich a Sandwich.”
3. Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!
Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! is a trivia show —hosted by Peter Sagal— that keeps you up-to-date on current events. Great for the political NGU student, this podcast is satirical and informational but also funny and pop-culturally relevant, featuring celebrity guests like Josh Groban and Trisha Yearwood.
4. 99% Invisible
Created and hosted by Roman Mars, 99% Invisible explains the artistic and design aspects of everyday objects. “The Ice King” reveals the history and luxury of ice cubes, and “Flying Food” investigates the trend of food beautification in advertising.
5. Stuff You Should Know
Stuff You Should Know, another How Stuff Works production, is a must listen for college students entering the adult world. Cohosted by Chuck Bryant and Josh Clark, the podcast breaks down topics young adults will find interesting and useful, such as “The Duality of Caffeine” and “How Gossip Works.”
