Humans of NGU: Dillon Davis, Mission’s Heart

A young boy reached out his hand as Dillon Davis climbed on the bus. Taking the boy’s hand, Davis had a realization. “This was more than just an American and a Guatemalan. . . he was more than just a mission field at that moment; at that moment, we were brothers; we were human beings on planet earth, and it was just a cool moment of unity between cultures and a realization that we are all humans here.”
A Christian Studies freshman, Davis said he has known he wanted to be a missionary since he heard a speaker who said that many missionaries would be coming home for furlough in the next few years.
His spring break trip to Guatemala with Locust Hill Baptist Church was eye-opening, he said.
Being part of the first American team to bring the gospel to Yalu, Guatemala, Davis said that he and his team were able to break the barrier of mistrust the Guatemalans had for the Americans.
One way they accomplished this was playing with the kids, who were at first apprehensive.
One day in the village, Davis said he didn’t have a translator. However, he didn’t let that stop him, deciding to play games with the kids, like mimicking them eating.
“They just loved it. The little girl came up to me after the VBS [we had in the feeding center] . . . and she smiled and waved. I just thought it was the coolest thing ever.”
The mission team, including Davis, also learned from the experience, he said.
“God called us to show us where He was working and to open the eyes of our hearts to the world around us,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the day when I’ll be able to see them. . . singing praises to God . . . It’ll be nothing short of heaven.”
