Humans of NGU: Charles, Chase and Chewbacca Loop

Emily Bright, Contributing Writer

“What’s your name?” is a simple question everyone is asked several times throughout their life, but for Charles Loop, the answer is a little more complex.

Like most people, this college freshman at North Greenville University has acquired a couple of nicknames throughout his life. For Charles, these nicknames became more and more a part of him.

This all started in sixth grade when Charles decided he wanted to switch things up and go by Chase instead. This lasted for a couple of years until he eventually got tired of it. Starting high school, he thought this would be a good opportunity to go by Charles again, but this wasn’t quite that simple.

His friends from middle school only knew him as Chase, so that’s what they called him, but all his new friends knew him as Charles. The problem soon became, “Is it Charles or Chase?” To add to the confusion and humor of the situation, people began to add new nicknames to the list. A name as simple as Chase somehow developed into Chuck, Chesterfield and Chewbacca. If it’s a name that starts with a “Ch” he will answer.

But this surprisingly isn’t what stands out the most when you think of Charles, Chase, Chester, Chewbacca or however you know him. Charles is currently studying math with the intent to pursue engineering. However, his goal at NGU isn’t just to get a degree. He deeply desires to mark people’s lives while also giving others a chance to mark his along the way.

If you have had the pleasure of meeting Charles, then you would easily recognize this. With every encounter, Charles is always willing to be real with you and offer help when needed. From simply being a good friend and a listening ear to being a pair of helping hands in the marching band, Charles is willing to help.

Even when asked why he wanted to pursue this career he stated, “I know that whatever I end up doing with engineering, I will be helping people.”

So, Charles Loop may not be known by his name at North Greenville University, but he is known for something he values even more: his character.
