North Greenville University women’s lacrosse has obtained its first two wins of the season, as well as the first in program history, over the College of Charleston and Truett McConnell on March 14 and 16.
A new face, not only to the new women’s lacrosse program but as an NGU student as well, freshman attackman Courtney Arndt said, “I was going to run cross country for NGU so I talked to coach Bayne about that. Last February, he called me asking if I was interested in playing lacrosse. I was excited to try a completely different sport and I am so glad I did.”
After starting the season 0-6 the Crusaders managed to dominate College of Charleston 15-2 on the road and during Spring Break. This was the first time the Crusaders were up in a game despite being down by large deficits in games earlier in the season. This was also the team’s highest score of the season so far until their very next matchup.
Arndt said, “That game was a big win for us because we now have the confidence in knowing that we can win.”
During that same weekend the Crusaders managed to win back-to-back games while shutting out the Bears of Truett McConnell College 20-0 at home. This ties the highest scoring game the Crusaders have had all season.
With just 40 seconds into the game, NGU took the lead off of a goal by Elizabeth Carey. This would ultimately set the tone for the entire game. A pair of sisters would lead the team in scoring. Monica Colwell had a career high five goals with her sister, Nikki Colwell, scoring four of her own. With such high scoring the Crusaders also shot a program high of 62 percent from making 20 out of 32 shots.
The team was also able to end the game with 12 assists. Ten different players were able to score at least one goal with five of them scoring in the double digits.
“For a first year team, the season has been great. I love my teammates and we work well together. Every day we are learning something new and our skills continue to grow. I look forward to seeing how great next season will be,” said Arndt.
NGU women’s lacrosse is now 2-8 after coming off of losses to Pfeiffer University and Lees-McRae College. The Crusaders will now look forward to a double-header at home versus the University of North Carolina Asheville on April 11 at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
