“My dog ate my article”: The most creative school excuses from NGU students

Casey Burton, Staff Writer

School is a big responsibility and sometimes it is easy to get caught up in everything going on outside of campus, resulting in missing class or missing work assignments. After some conversation with students and professors here at North Greenville, some of the excuses given by students can be considered funny and unique; totally worth sharing.

Some students who gave their most creative excuses for this article are not named for safety reasons in the event that their professor reads this piece.

  1. “One-time last semester, I just didn’t feel like getting up out of bed and I emailed my professor to tell him I wouldn’t be there. The email said ‘Hey, I am currently stuck at home because my car doesn’t drive well in rain. I won’t be able to make it to class.’ Turns out, it was sunny all day and I thought it was raining because my roommate had a white-noise machine going that sounded like rain.”
  2. North Greenville Professor Chreifi, shared that he had a student ask him if a funeral for a family member would count as an excused absence. He answered yes and excused the student for missing class and exempted this student from that day’s assignment. Only to find out a week later from another student, that the funeral was for a pet goldfish.
  3. We all have heard the infamous quote for missing assignments, “My dog ate my homework.” Well, what does one do in the event that one’s dog does actually tear up their homework? Student, Becca Hunter had this problem and had to collect all the different pieces of torn of paper and tape it all back together. She said turning it in was super embarrassing but made a good memory.
  4. “One day I was in my dorm and could not leave since I could not find my keys. My class was in the theatre building and I broke my leg, so I was not about to walk all the way over there on crutches…there’s too many hills. And I emailed my professor and said, ‘Hey, I cannot make it too class, too many hills.’ I totally forgot that my professor did not know I was temporarily disabled. My professor never answered.”
  5. “For multimedia, we had an assignment to take a selfie of me and President Fant. As I was taking the selfie, my phone dropped on the floor and shattered everywhere. Like completely destroyed my phone. So, I had to go to class with no selfie and no phone. And I had to tell my professor that I needed a new phone for the assignment. It was awkward because I actually had to listen to the lecture since I did not have my phone.”
  6. Professor Elder mentioned how one of her students used a wild excuse to miss her class but ran into them later the same day. She said that a student emailed her saying they got in a bad car wreck and resulted to a hospital visit, with two broken legs…but was able to be walking around campus, into the café three hours after class time ended.
