Between all of the hustle and bustle on the North Greenville University campus, there are deadlines, projects and assignments to get done. Students rely on study spots to minimize distractions and stay productive. Let’s go through and look at the five most popular study spots around the NGU campus.

Ratings are based on outlet availability and overall noise levels.

Library:

Overall rating: 8/10

Whether you need to finish a paper with no distractions or have a group project, the library provides space for independent study and group study. With the upstairs being a no talk zone and the downstairs allows group study. There is a Christian studies reference room where students can find resources such as commentaries, theological texts, biblical dictionaries and scholarly works to aid in gaining a deeper biblical understanding. In the upstairs area there is also a curriculum lab where students who major in elementary education have access to textbooks, lesson plans, teaching materials and instructional tools to support classroom planning and curriculum development.

On campus, the library has a wide range of regular semester open hours. Below are the hours of operation for a regular semester:

Sunday: 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Monday – Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.

Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Saturday: 12-5 p.m.

Kinsey Thomas, senior intercultural studies, “My favorite study spot is the library because it’s generally quiet and there’s a lot of space to work.”

Plaster

Overall Rating: 8/10

As one of the newer buildings on campus, Plaster offers a variety of seating for independent or group study. As well as, a variety of outlets around the building and plenty of natural lighting. There are a couple of disadvantages. For example, it is busy throughout the day. Since the classrooms as well as the common area are all in the same space, transitions between classes can be noisy which can make it difficult to concentrate.

Although the space provides a good environment for productivity, it is not open as often as many would hope. Below are the hours of operation throughout a regular semester:

Sunday: Closed

Weekdays: 7 a.m – 9 p.m

Plaster doors are on a timer so the hours may vary.

Stud

Overall Rating: 6/10

The Student Center, widely known as the Stud, is the hub for campus life, but it is also a place for studying. With plenty of outlets and seating, it is no wonder why many choose this as their go-to study spot. In addition, it is nearby to 1892 and Chick-Fil-A making it convenient for quick study snacks. During lunch and dinner time, there is a lot of foot traffic but aside from that, there is plenty of space to get work done.

Hours of operation:

Sunday- Saturday: 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

1892

Overall Rating: 5/10

In the role of the snack station on campus, 1892 provides fast access to study snacks as well as a variety of different seating. On the downside, there are not many outlets or any windows and since it is a social area, it can often have heavy foot traffic throughout the week days. But typically the best time to study here is in the early morning or in the evening past dinnertime.

Doors are open between the following times:

Sunday: 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Monday-Saturday: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Craft Lobby

Overall rating: 5/10

The Christian studies capital of NGU provides an area to study with plenty of natural light and a variety of seating. Most of the outlets are along the perimeter of the lobby and it is typically noisy in between classes.

Below are the hours of operation:

Sunday: closed

Monday- Friday: 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Times may vary

Honorable Mention: Outside/Outdoors

Studying outdoors is nice when there is warm weather. Although it may not have any outlets or tables, for many, it provides a calm environment to get work done.

David Kovalev, senior cybersecurity, said, “When I’m outside there’s cars driving by and there’s people walking. You can get a bunch of stuff done and when I’m taking breaks, I can just look up.”
