Karaoke: Public speaking style

Karaoke: Public speaking style

Riley Belle Kinard, Visual Arts Editor

Karaoke is always a night-on-the-town favorite. You may even see friends fighting over the microphone, but if you were to say public speaking, not many are going to jump up and volunteer to give a presentation. Karaoke PowerPoint night gave students the opportunity to strengthen their public speaking and presenting skills while being put on the spot.

Students came to karaoke public speaking night not knowing what to expect. When they got up to present, they were given a slideshow that was a compilation of random photos, graphs and diagrams. Students were graded based on how well they could present information they had not studied.

Students were asked to grade the presentations based on how well they were able to get up and present the random slides of information. The presenters with the highest scores were able to take a basket of goodies.

Friends Natalie Cannon, sophomore intercultural studies major, and Jenna Lyda, sophomore psychology major, have a great time listening to other’s presentations.

With a presentation full of cultural pictures, Tessa Haack, senior intercultural studies major, talks about the importance of community. We learned that community creates a sense of belonging which is an important factor while in college.

Ethan Copleston, freshman business management major, and Riley Thompson, freshman Christian studies major, tell a compelling story throughout their presentation. They transitioned seamlessly despite technical difficulties and learned how to go with the flow.

The rest of the class was able to interact with the presentations by grading the presenters on how well they taught the information on the spot. Some presenters were natural public speakers and made it easy for them to tell a story with random information.

Riley and Ethan’s compelling storytelling skills and practice of public speaking helped them make the highest grade, coming in first place. Not only did they take home a basket full of snacks, drinks and desserts, they also grew in their public speaking skills.

Jenna and Natalie won third place for providing humor in their presentation, while staying on topic and connecting the images with a meaningful story.
