The desk deer: A bizarre prank

Treasure Hardwick, Staff Writer

At NGU, students are no strangers to the occasional prank, but one recent incident took things to an entirely new level. What started as an innocent gesture quickly became the subject of bizarre intrigue and laughter when a dead deer was found on a student’s porch.

One mundane morning on campus, Collin Jacobs, student at NGU, was leaving his dorm in Crusader Court when he stumbled upon an outlandish sight: a dead deer on his porch. The deer was propped up on a desk that he kept outside, and it was perfectly still and picturesque.

Jacobs took a double-glance and immediately began to filter through his thoughts. He explained that his first thought was one of uneasiness and fear.

Jacobs explained that the animal looked alive, and he thought it would come to life out of nowhere and kick him in the head and give him a concussion. He also thought that the person who put the deer there was trying to get a point across.

“I thought someone was trying to send me a message and let me know that I wasn’t welcomed here at NGU, and I thought they were trying to scare me off,” said Jacobs.

After these uneasy thoughts, he began to hope for the best. He concluded that one of his friends wanted to pull an innocent prank on him. So, Jacobs pulled out his phone and filmed a video for his Instagram feed showing his followers what had happened.

A little while later, Jacobs found out that his housemate, Cody Harrill, another student at NGU, had put the deer on the porch as a prank.

He explained that Harrill was driving late at night when a deer ran out in the road, causing Harrill to hit it with his truck. After the accident, Harrill decided that he wanted to skin the deer on campus and store it in his freezer.

“He wanted a lifetime supply of some good ole fashioned holiday deer meat,” Jacobs said.

After the initial discovery of the deer, Jacobs and Harrill left the deer on the porch for about a day before Harrill drove off campus and chucked it off a mountain to let nature run its course.

While the deer was still on his porch, Jacobs said that students passing by were shocked and weirded out by the sight of a dead animal sitting on a desk. His friends told Jacobs that even though they thought it was funny, they were a bit disturbed.

Although the prank was harmless and amusing, campus police and security did check out the situation.

Jeff Smith, director of campus safety and security, explained that he wasn’t worried about any foul play when he heard about the situation.

Smith said, “We first thought someone was playing a joke on another student and soon found out it was placed there by the person who had struck the deer. At the end of the day, it was funny to see a deer sitting at a table outside the residence.”
