No matter where you live, there is always a headline waiting to be read. In the world today, there are so many that can be missed amid the ever-changing news cycle.

In North America, the new Broadway musical to film adaptation “Wicked” has ruled the box office in the first three days of its release. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this movie opened with an estimated $114 million in the box office. It has also earned the top opening for a Broadway musical adaptation.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have taken over Oz and are both expected to be nominated for an Oscar in the upcoming awards season. 

According to The U.S. News, an unfortunate event took place in Laos, where a New Zealand native was poisoned by contaminated alcohol. Laos has said they will reprimand whoever is guilty of this crime, and the New Zealand native has now returned home. This poison has killed six tourists, and it is believed they were poisoned with methanol.

In the United States, there is a lot of chatter surrounding the still fresh news that the new President of the United States will be Donald Trump. One of the main promises that has his voters so receptive to him is the idea of downsizing the government.

According to Newt Gingrich via USA Today, Trump is dealing with a country who dislikes and is skeptical of big government. The most recent polls asking citizens if they have “trust and confidence” in the executive branch of government came out to a small 40% who said yes.

Trust in the government has barely reached over 30% since 2007, according to Pew Research Center’s Survey, and Trump says he has a plan to change that.

In devastating news for many South Carolina natives, the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team’s record-breaking win streak has been broken by UCLA. The Gamecocks have not lost a regular season game since December 2021.

They were on a 43-game win streak until the Bruins beat them 77-62, according to ESPN. UCLA led the first half, and while South Carolina tried to fight back, they could not pull off the win.

There was a shooting in a parking garage close to the Laurens Street and North Street intersection in Greenville, S.C., which injured two. Just after 1 a.m. on Nov. 24, police heard gunshots and rushed to the parking garage. The police are still investigating and there are no suspects at this time, but the two victims were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital and are being treated now, via WYFF4.  

In more local news, Tigerville is hosting its fifth annual Christmas parade on Dec. 6. NGU News says the parade will start at 6 p.m. and will travel from the Highway 414 and Highway 253 intersection to Tigerville Elementary School Road, then back east and south to Highway 414.

All the money earned from the event will be donated to the Tigerville Fire Department. NGU is the parade’s lead sponsor, and they urge everyone to enjoy the holiday cheer with food trucks and craft vendors.  

North Greenville University has named Mark Reeves the Senior Vice President for Finance, which was announced by NGU President Gene Fant on Friday, November 22. Reeves has many careers tied to his name, including time in healthcare as well as taxes and accounting.

According to NGU News, Reeves will start his tenure on Dec. 2, 2024. He is originally from Iowa and has a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Drake University and completed an MBA degree from the University of Wisconsin. Fant and NGU are excited for this new addition
