The homecoming week at North Greenville University reached its peak on Saturday as the Trailblazers defeated Erskine College, securing a 52-35 victory. Fans packed the stadium, resisting the hot sun of the south to support the team, where NGU’s football players delivered a spectacular game.
Head coach Jeff Farrington, who has been leading NGU’s football program since 2013, knew the preparation behind going into the game. Earlier in the week, Farrington reflected on his coaching philosophy and approach to this match.
He said, “This game against Erskine is no different than any other game. We try to prepare for every opponent the same way, focusing on improving our techniques and game plan.”
Farrington, a Citadel graduate with coaching experience spanning decades, emphasized that preparation is more than just strategy.
“Football happens to be a sport where you spend more time training than actually playing games. Time management is critical for our players, and we ensure our players understand that,” Farrington said.
That disciplined approach paid off on game day. North Greenville’s offense was unstoppable, scoring two touchdowns in each quarter. Quarterback Dylan Ramirez set the pace early, connecting with Tyshon Mansell for a 49-yard touchdown pass, the first of his six touchdown throws for the day.
Ramirez was right to connect with Dre’ Williams, who was a key factor in NGU’s offense. Williams caught eight passes for 208 yards, with four of those receptions resulting in touchdowns. His longest score came from a spectacular 70-yard catch-and-run in the second half.
Farrington, speaking before the game, highlighted the importance of seizing opportunities.
“In football, you never know when your moment is going to come. You have to be prepared for that one play that can change the game,” Farrington said.
Jacob Walker also contributed significantly to the Trailblazers’ offensive success. Walker rushed for 119 yards and found the end zone twice, including a 44-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
While NGU’s offense was shining, their defense was equally impressive. They tied a program record with nine sacks, constantly pressuring Erskine’s quarterback and disrupting their offensive rhythm.
De’Iveon Donald led the defensive front, recording two sacks and contributing eight total tackles. NGU defenders also forced two turnovers, including a fumble punched out by John Porter and recovered by Brannon Teamer, as well as an interception by Warren Coneway.
Erskine’s offense struggled to gain any traction throughout the game, managing only 289 total yards, with just 53 coming on the ground. NGU’s defense suffocated Erskine’s running game, and the pressure from the defensive line left Erskine scrambling for solutions.
The homecoming atmosphere led to high expectations for the Trailblazers, and the team delivered in every phase of the game.
NGU’s 52-35 victory was not just a win — it was a statement. With the duo of Dylan Ramirez and Dre’ Williams setting records and the defense playing at an elite level, the Trailblazers have shown they are a high-caliber team this season.
As they continue, the focus will remain on preparation, execution and the pursuit of excellence.
