Where the grass is greener- Learn about grass volleyball intramural

There are many different versions of intramural volleyball here at North Greenville University. There is volleyball in the gym, sand volleyball and grass volleyball. But how are they different?
NGU’s Grass volleyball intramural is played on campus, right outside of the Chick-fil-A on the stud field…and you probably guessed it, it’s played in the grass. The nets are put up and the games are played with the same rules.
The multiple nets are set up outside to where all the games are played at a time. As the games take place, people who watch can stand by the courts and hang out. The same rules as the sand volleyball pertain to the grass volleyball rules; six players on the court for each team and at least one girl and boy per team. Also, no volleyball players who play for NGU can play on intramurals due to fairness.
Intramurals have always been a big hit to the student body here at NGU. There have been numerous occasions where there are far more attendees to the intramural sporting events than NCAA sporting events on campus. Students have enjoyed grass volleyball, as it has been trending on campus and has picked up in popularity.
“Intramurals have been so fun and are a great way to meet people on campus that you don’t have any classes with. It’s easy to get wrapped up in school assignments and homework, but intramurals keep us active and social which is good and will help us get through,” Katherine Palm, senior said.
The volleyball games have been a fun way for students to destress and mingle, as the games happen after class hours. The winner of the games is recorded and led to a championship tournament. The winner of the championship wins bragging rights and possibly a t-shirt.
“I like grass volleyball because it is a different vibe than normal volleyball and sand. I feel like it is harder to dive for the ball or slide because of the grass, but it is different,” Austin Mitchell, junior said.
The reasoning behind not playing in the gym or sand right now is because of the cold sand and basketball and volleyball practices taking place. The gym hours are always being used and currently, there are no available hours. The cold weather outside interferes with sand volleyball because the sand is just cold and would be uncomfortable to play on.
The intramural program has been an important part of campus life here at NGU, as it brings all kinds of students together. With the new sports and locations, it keeps the intramurals popular and a staple in student life. The evolving of sports and activities on campus makes the college experience more fun for everyone.
Building community is one of North Greenville’s many strengths. There are many ways students can meet and mingle on campus.
“There is no excuse for feeling lonely at NGU. Not with all the events and inclusion we have here,” Jared Thomas with CMSE said.
