From college graduate to back in elementary school classroom- Senior profile on Skyler Vicino

A lifetime of school might sound draining to some people, but not North Greenville University senior, Skyler Vicino. She hopes to be the best teacher Greenville County has ever seen.

Vicino has always wanted to become a teacher for as long as she could remember. When she was younger, she would even prop up her stuffed toys and pretend to be teaching the toys what she learned in school that day.

Vicino decided to attend North Greenville after hearing how great the education department is. She is an Elementary education major with an early childhood add-on. This means she will be certified to teach little kids from the grade levels kindergarten through sixth grade.

Vicino loves little kids so much that during her years here at North Greenville, she lived on campus her first two years and has spent her last two years commuting from home. She decided to commute since it is more convenient for her to work her afterschool program at her local elementary school, Rudolph Gordon Elementary School in Simpsonville.

Her favorite memory from North Greenville University is the snow days that took place on campus. She said she remembers making a snowman on the NGU baseball field like it was yesterday and being excited that it meant no class the next day.

Vicino just recently got engaged last September at the beginning of her senior year and she has been ready to get the ball rolling with the year. The sooner she graduates, the sooner she gets married. She said that she hopes it won’t be too confusing for the kids when she has to change her name from Vicino to Carter a few months into teaching.

The education department at NGU has taught Skyler a lot about her love for teaching and the real world. She has learned how to conduct a classroom through her student teaching that she is completing this year. This has allowed her to get real-world experiences with the school system and kids today.

“Student teaching is a grade, but it has been so much fun. I have grown close with the kids I get to teach, and I enjoy being a part of their learning journey while I’m with them”, Vicino said.

Vicino’s ideal county is Greenville County. Of all the schools to work in, she hopes to find work in her home county, wherever God places her. She said she wouldn’t mind the school even if that means it not being title one, she hopes wherever she ends up, she will be equipping young minds.

Vicino graduates this upcoming May and plans on spending her summer working summer school for little kids while planning her dream wedding. As she finishes up her time at NGU, she hopes that people who may want to teach, will have the passion and drive the kids deserve.
