A playlist for every mood: Meet Spotify’s daylist

From “Fantasizing Superstar Monday Afternoon” to “For The Soul R&B Monday Evening,” Spotify has the playlist for you. The platform launched its daylist feature for Spotify premium listeners on September 12. The daylist feature has a playlist tailored to the many moods listeners experience throughout the day.

This new feature creates a playlist for users at random periods during the day that reflects a mood that is specific to the user. In addition to the frequent updates throughout the day, it offers users a chance to experience many mood-specific playlists throughout the day.

Spotify has continued to make updates to premium features that allow the listener’s experience to be more custom and unique throughout 2023. In February Spotify introduced an AI DJ. The AI DJ gives users a personalized listening experience with commentary and a wide variety of music mixes.

According to Spotify, the goal of daylists is “bringing together the niche music and microgenres you usually listen to during particular moments in the day or on specific days of the week. It updates frequently between sunup and sundown with a series of highly specific playlists made for every version of you.”

One thing that is unique about the new playlist is that once the playlist updates, it is gone forever. You can save these playlists during the time they are available, but “If you don’t save it prior to the next update on your daylist, it’ll be gone with the wind—so don’t delay.”

Spotify premium users are able to access the daylist by either searching “daylist” or under the music tab on the home screen. Although users aren’t able to access the same playlist twice, Spotify has ready-made screenshots, stickers and share cards for you to compare and share playlists with other users.

A survey of NGU students showed that the response to Spotify’s daylist has been positive.

Kayla George, senior education major, said, “I liked it. Mine was a mixture of things I have been listening to lately. The only complaint I have is that it was a couple of different vibes, so depending on my mood, I had to skip some because I just wasn’t feeling it. But the vibe it says was the one I was getting.”

Corban Wood, business marketing senior, gave her input about the Spotify daylist: “Mine is ‘Frustrated Complex Thursday afternoon.’ At first, I didn’t think that it was accurate, but I know half the songs on the playlist. The more I listened I realized it was actually pretty accurate.”

Recent alumni Katie George said, “My playlist right now is ‘Missing You Slow Pop Thursday Afternoon.’ I like mine. The songs are good, and a lot I haven’t listened to before, but the name made me giggle.”

Spotify has made many changes to its platform to be better tailored to the listener’s picks. As many people continue to enjoy the new changes, they can’t wait to see what is coming next.
