Forging the way to September 30

College sports represent one of the most consumed sources of entertainment by the American public; sports such as baseball or football generate euphoria among the masses.
At North Greenville University, despite having football and baseball as references, cross country is a sport that should be looked at much more closely. Cameron Stobber, head cross country coach at North Greenville University, has a 9 year career with the entity. He has very clear expectations about this season.
“Our expectation is always to compete for a conference title. We realize that’s a difficult thing to do because we have some talented schools in our conference. But that’s always the end goal for us: to win a conference title.” Stobber said.
A big event for Stobber and his runners will take place on September 30. This event will take place at the University of North Georgia where several important teams from the region will be present.
“It’s a preview of the Regional Championship, which is the race before the national championship. So our main goal going there is to run well, but more than anything, we want to get an idea of what the track will be like.” Stobber said.
Kylie Futrell and Hayden Goode are two important pieces for Stobber’s scheme. Kylie Futrell being the captain of the women’s team and Hayden Goode as one of the leaders of the men’s team. They plan to take both teams to the top of the championship.
“This year, the goal is to get the three best teams in the conference. I think we definitely have a team that can do it. It will be a matter of giving it our all. The top three is the goal, winning would be fantastic,” Futrell said.
For Goode, this year is the last chance so he feels he needs to achieve these goals for his team before he leaves.
“Considering what I’ve done in the past, I’ve held several school records, being second fastest in Cross country. I would say I have a significant impact on the team, although I still have a lot of potential to show,” Goode said.
Stobber’s work has been significant and has influenced Goode’s life. He described how much he has done for him.
“My coach has helped me not only be a better athlete but also a better man. Coach Stobber has the integrity to work with since he has been able to build a team of the caliber to reach the national championship, I feel that with this group it can be made possible.” Goode said.
Lastly, Stobber wanted to send a message to the students about how to support the runners.
“Cross country is one of those sports a lot of people don’t think much about, I think the biggest thing for our athletes is for them to feel they are cared about and invested in as much as a football player. we have a great football team, but those sports are a lot more popular here in the south than cross country or track. So, I think for them, just getting the respect they deserve. Because I can assure you, they’re working hard.” Stobber said.
