Silicon Valley Bank fails

One of the biggest banks on the west coast, Silicon Valley Bank has failed. The bank told its investors they were about to lose several billion dollars due to their investments. The announcement sent shockwaves amongst their depositors who feared they would lose their money.

Many of the banks’ depositors went to the bank and withdrew their money. Due to the sudden surge in customers as the bank was already not doing well, the bank essentially collapsed. Silicon Valley Bank was taken over by the government.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation only guarantees $250,000 per account. Over 97% of Silicon Valley Bank customers had more than the FDIC guarantee in their accounts. Ultimately the FDIC and federal government covered ALL depositors so that no one would lose money. This bank failure is particularly interesting because a few other banks have failed since then. Some economic experts wonder if the US banking system will start seeing failures soon. The US Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, though said the US banking system is “sound.”

If China does provide weaponry to Russia, the consequences could be disastrous. As of now, it’s unclear what was decided.

Rotting Fish to be removed from an Australian river.

After devastating floods hit parts of the Australian Outback, dead fish are set to be removed from the surrounding rivers. Due to the floods and unprecedented heat, the water’s oxygen levels decreased causing millions of fish to die. The dead fish smell bad to residents so they will be cleaned up.

Contractors are set to begin removing the rotting fish soon. The community water supply is currently being impacted by dead fish. Right now, water is being brought in from outside sources. The cleanup is expected to take several days but the hope is for the water supply to be returned to normal again.
