Got room? 10 dorm hacks for optimal storage

Casey Burton, Staff Writer

Dorms here at North Greenville, and well, everywhere else, are a bit small and adjusting to living in such a small place with another person can be difficult. Have no fear, though. Some students at NGU have figured out certain dorm hacks to make use of their small space and found creative ways to remain organized while trying to live comfortably.

  1. Nobody likes to see a pile of shoes sitting on the ground or misplacing one of the shoes of a pair. A shoe rack helps the organization and look of a room appear more in place.
  2. If your bed is lofted, use the space under the bed as extra space for storage. If your bed is not lofted, bed risers allow for the same effect and can be helpful to have extra room to place a hamper or shoe rack.
  3. Closet space can be a challenge if you have more than ten shirts, so getting a teared hanger can help you put up more clothes than you may have room for in your closet.
  4. Taylor Susie, senior, says, “A rolling cart filled with important self-care products or just snacks can be a cute and productive way to maneuver your stuff and always know where it is”.
  5. Katherine Palm, Junior, says,” Command hooks go a long way for a dorm, especially since most dorms have a policy against nailing into the walls. Command hooks are a good alternative and are a good way to have a coat hanger, a key holder, or even stick your room decor to the walls productively. Command hooks even have a shelf that could stick to the wall that could hold books or more décor.”
  6. If you’re bad at losing your phone charger or forgetting to plug up your phone at night, a charger holder can help tremendously with these problems. A charger holder is a clip that sticks to your desk, so you always know it’s there and since it’s in sight, you won’t forget to charge it at night.
  7.  College life demands a lot of electronic use from your laptops, phones, microwaves, coffee makers; one thing that really comes in handy is a power outlet strip or an extension cord. This helps you use or charge all at once and takes less time and stress to take care of.
  8. Some dorms here at North Greenville don’t even have laundry rooms, so for students to have access to doing laundry, a lot of people take their clothes over to the closest dorm with a laundry room to do it. With all of this back-and-forth walking, over time it gets tiresome, but rather than carrying around a laundry basket, get a laundry bag backpack.
  9. Another storage hack is a foldable storage ottoman, this gives you the opportunity to stash books away or school supplies that you wouldn’t want displayed constantly. It’s easily portable and easy to move around or put away.
  10. A shower supplies holder also helps keep all your shower items and self-care products together and easily portable. Sharing shower space means you probably don’t want to keep all your supplies in the shower for others to use. So, the shower supplies carrier goes a long way.
