Experience opening night: “The Good Doctor” edition

Seth Atkins, Visual Arts Editor

Have you ever wondered what an opening night of a show at NGU is like? It’s a night filled with excitement, nerves and eagerness. The cast and crew get to finally share beautiful art that they have been working on for weeks with their community. The audience on an opening night is the first to see the show that’s being performed, and that is something special.

To provide some insight, below you will get to experience the opening night of “The Good Doctor” through pictures. Out of respect for the cast, crew and show itself, there will be no photos below of the actual performance. Instead, you will see the events surrounding the show and how an audience member would step into the world of theatre.

“The Good Doctor” opened Feb. 17, 2022. On this opening night, the audience is about to experience stories of the human condition and step into the world of Anton Chekhov, a Russian playwright. So, the set is ready, the lights are on and great storying telling is ready to be shared.

As you walk into the lobby, which opens at 7:00 p.m., you will see this poster of the “director’s note.” “The Good Doctor” is directed by Veronica Rogers, senior. You can read this poster to get a more in-depth description and a word from Veronica about the show.
Before the doors are opened into the theatre, you have time to sit and relax. Hannah Lilly, junior, and Emily Hansen, senior, wait in the lobby for the doors to open.
As you are about to walk into the theatre space, you will be happily greeted by Charlie Watson, senior, Abby Manson, freshman.
Don’t forget your ticket. When coming to a theatre performance here at NGU, you need to bring your ticket. Senior, Ashley Rosa, and her friend have their ticket ready in hand.
As you walk into the theatre space, you will scan your ticket and head on in. Arianna Wilson, sophomore, gets her ticket scanned by Watson.
To receive a digital program for the show, just find one of these posters and scan it with your phone. When you scan, you will be able to see who is in the cast, crew, and all the hands that helped prepare “The Good Doctor”. At each show for NGU, there are posters put up like this at different spots in the Billingsley.
As you can see, the black-box theatre is getting filled for “The Good Doctor”. The opening night audience eagerly waits to see the show.
Cora Luther, junior, Lara Cloninger, freshman, and Delanie Burnett, freshman, wait in their seats moments before the show begins. It’s showtime…
Hannah Rankin, senior, Lezette Folk, freshman, Kendal Conley and Arianna Wilson, sophomores, are hanging out during intermission. Intermission is a 10 minute break between act one and act two of the show.
During intermission, you have time to take in the beautiful, artistic set of the show. Isn’t it just amazing?
A closer look of the hanging chairs a part of “The Good Doctor’s” set. Now act two is about to start…
The show is finished, and the cast made their bows, now it’s time leave the space. As you exit, don’t forget to get your cultural event credit. Watson is scanning student IDs at the door.
One of the most amazing things about theatre is sharing all you hard work with your friends and family. JP Waynick, junior, is posing for a picture with his mom, who came to this opening night to see him perform in “The Good Doctor”.
The director, Veronica Rogers, poses for a picture on the set of the show she directed. This photo is taken at the end of a successful opening night.

Now all that would be left to do is let the art that was presented speak to you. That’s what theatre does, it speaks messages, tells stories, and provides many forms of entertainment. Thank you for taking this journey of the opening night of “The Good Doctor”.
