NGU is right on track

North Greenville’s track and field team is taking first place, breaking records and making a name for itself.

This year marks the tenth season for North Greenville’s track and field program, and with two track meets left in the season, NGU is leaving it’s mark.

The team’s past meet on Jan. 21 at Roanoke College ended with the men coming home with four first place finishes and the women braking multiple personal records. The team was also ranked ninth in the Southeast Region.

Olivia Huskey, sophomore, runs hurdles, long sprints and high jumps for the team. She has recently accomplished many accolades and made a big impact on the NGU team.

Huskey was named “Field Athlete of the Week” after she broke the school’s high jump record and hit a NCAA Division II provisional mark. She was excited to see her hard work pay off.

Huskey said, “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to use the gifts the Lord has given me for His glory. I never expected to hit the NCAA Division II provisional mark. It was something I worked for all the way through May last year, so to see that so early in the season this year is super exciting.”

Huskey says her goals for the indoor season are to “stay ranked and make it to the national meet.”

Our men’s 4×400 team has also been making a statement this season after finishing first at the Roanoke meet and placing in the top 20 at the South Carolina Invitational this past weekend.

Amir McCall, senior , runs the 800 meter, 400 meter and is on the men’s 4×400 team. McCall says heading into his final season is a bitter, yet sweet moment.

McCall said he finds it an honor to be on the 4×400 team and believes it’s the most exhilarating race.

He added, “In a relay, you’re running for more than just yourself. You’re running for your teammates, school and coaches.”

He said at their past meet, the 4×400 team went in with a focused, positive mindset. He added, “We showed up and showed out, simple as that.”

McCall said he wants to leave this season knowing he gave his all and accomplished some personal records on the way.
