Sweater Weather is Here

Tolli McWhite, Staff Writer

Sweater weather is here and I’m here to show you some essential, trendy staples to keep in your closet this fall and winter.

A fall clothing item that will never get old is the flannel. Its plaid patterns give a very cozy and fall vibe and add character to any outfit and they are great for layering. You can find flannels at most clothing stores, online, thrift stores and even Walmart.

A new popular clothing item that is a spin-off of the flannel is the “shacket.” A combination of the words Sherpa and jacket. These are thicker and warmer than a typical flannel but still have a fun pattern. These are sold at popular stores such as Forever 21, American eagle, H&M and many online sites.

Sherpa jackets have been popular for a few years and they are still here. Sherpa is a curly, pilled fabric that resembles sheep’s wool. Most stores in the mall will carry them.

Essential staples for girls during the fall and winter are a good pair of leggings and a white cardigan. Leggings are easy and comfortable to throw on for class and you can dress them up or down. White cardigans can be thrown over any shirt or dress to make it fall appropriate.

If you like fun colors and taking bold fashion steps, go check out your grandpa’s closet or a local thrift store for grandpa sweaters. They are super warm and an easy to throw on and make a statement.

To complete a fall/winter outfit, a cute pair of shoes is a necessity. Chelsea boots are usually ankle height with two elastic panels along the ankles and a convenient loop on the back so you can slip them on and go. The majority of shoe stores will be carrying Chelsea boots during this season.

Another popular winter boot is the classic Doc Marten. This brand has many styles but their most popular is 1460 leather lace-up boot. Many retailers have started making their own version of these boots because Doc Martens are on the pricier side because their shoes are handmade with real leather. You can purchase Doc Martens on their website, at Journey’s or Rack Room Shoes.

For men, flannel is a great winter staple as well. A classy winter dress shoe is the Clarks desert boot. They are a perfect brown leather that can go with just about anything and are great for casual and every day.
