Survival guide to 8 a.m. classes

Ariona Imel, Staff Writer

When creating a class schedule for the semester, the last thing a student wants is to have a class at 8 a.m. Some students make it their goal to get through college without having an 8 a.m. class. It’s already hard enough getting out of bed as it is; having an 8 a.m. doesn’t make it any better. So how do students survive them? Here are some tips to help you prepare yourself when faced with an 8 a.m. class.

Set an alarm for the next day.

Give yourself plenty of time to get up and get ready. This is vital; you don’t want to ever be late to class because you slept in. If you are a deep sleeper, it’s probably best to set multiple alarms. Set your alarms for at least an hour or 45 minutes ahead of time. You’ll be able to have plenty of time to get up and get ready for class. Be sure not to set a loud and obnoxious alarm that’s going to give you the scare of your life. Set a nice soft tone that will slowly wake you out of your slumber.

Get all your assignments done before getting to class.

This is another important tip; working on your assignments the night before or even the morning of isn’t a good idea. Get your homework done at least one or two days before you have your class. This will give you a peace of mind, and you’ll be able to get up for your 8 a.m. without having to think about working on homework. If needed, set a reminder on your phone to help you remember to get it done.

Start a routine.

Once you’re out of bed, have something to do to keep you from crawling back under the covers. Maybe do a little yoga once you get out of bed; this can help wake your body and mind. You could set a goal that once you’re up and ready, reward yourself with a quick trip to Dunkin’ for an iced coffee or donut. Whatever it is you need to do to make your morning a little more bearable, do it, but consistency is key.

Always eat breakfast.

This will help boost your energy and get your brain started for the day. You don’t want to show up to class groggy and half awake; having breakfast can quick start your brain so that you’re alert and focused to pay attention in class. Most people don’t think that eating breakfast is important, but it actually is. It can help boost your energy for the day, even if all you eat is some fruit and yogurt, or even a multigrain bar.

Try and get 8 hours of sleep or more each night.

This is so important for students to know. After a long day in class, your body needs its rest too. Staying up late rather than sleeping does no good for you or your brain. Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night can really help you out, especially if you have to wake up for an 8 a.m.
