Humans of NGU: Lauren Millette
Delaney Blackburn, Contributing Writer
White water rafter, skier, zip-liner and hiker: Lauren Millette is a true enthusiast for outdoor adventure.
Millette loves nature and spends most of her summers finding new opportunities to surround herself with it. From skiing down nearly all of the mountains in North Carolina to hiking in new locations, Millette has had her fair share of experiences with the great outdoors.
Despite her familiarity with mother nature, Millette will still be stepping out of her comfort zone this summer. “Most of my white water rafting experience is from the White Water Center,” she said, “but this year I am planning a trip to raft in a natural river.”
Although Millette loves the adrenaline she gets when she rushes down the rivers and flies over the trees, she said that most people find it a little odd that she would enjoy such activities. “I am a quiet, anxious person until you really get to know me,” she said, “I am a type A personality meaning I like to be in control and these situations can get out of my control.”
Although it isn’t always easy, Millette still pushes through her inhibitions for the sake of gaining experience. She wants to demonstrate that spending time outdoors can open up a person to new and helpful ways to cope with stress, anxiety and other issues.
“I would definitely recommend connecting with nature in this way at least once in your life,” she said, “It’s an exhilarating experience.”
