Things to do in quarantine
Autumn Lowry, Associate Writer
North Greenville Students have been home from school for almost a month now due to COVID-19 and by this point are pretty settled in the new normal.
When the government told us we had to stay inside our home, my first reaction was, “you want me to stay in my house and just watch Netflix and eat snacks all day? Fine by me?.”
What a dream come true, right? I don’t have to get dressed in the mornings or brush my hair. Goodbye make-up and hello potato chips and all 16 seasons of Greys Anatomy. Of course, this all comes second to getting my online school work done. Obviously.
However, after three weeks of this and 200 episodes later I don’t think I can do it anymore.
My body wasn’t meant to lay on the couch for 13 hours, who would have thought.
During this time of isolation, there has to be something else we can do. There has to be more ways we can use this time to grow and learn.
I asked my fellow classmates, “What are skills you’ve learned or want to learn while being stuck at home?”
This is what we came up with.
Learning a new language –
Jazmyne Boozer, senior, wants to learn a new language. Specifically, Mandarin. I looked up how to say “hello” in Mandarin and immediately closed the app. Good luck, Jazmyne.
Becoming a chef –
Connor Boulet, senior, is going to spend his time alone learning how to cook. When I asked what he might try to make he was undecided. I personally make a delicious Grilled Peanut Butter. It’s like Grilled Cheese but cooler. Maybe try Ratatouille, Connor. Now that would be a cool skill. You can find simple recipes that don’t require a ton of ingredients on Pinterest. Go ahead and download it, your taste buds will thank me later.
Photoshop –
Samantha Martin, junior and associate writer at The Vision, is a Digital Media major, so she already has some major skills with Photoshop. But she’s using this time to further her abilities.
She told me, “I’ll probably make more stickers. They are a little more challenging so I might try pushing the limit a little more each time.”
You go girl. This is the perfect time to really focus on your major and spend more time on your own digging into all the unlimited resources we have available. Why not be the best of the best, right?
Gardening –
Claire Hill, senior, is dabbling into some landscaping. I think this is a perfect idea. It has been so warm outside lately and if you’re like me and always putting projects like this off, then now is the time to make it happen. Building a flower bed might also make this time feel a bit less depressing. Flowers make everything better.
Art –
Grace Lothridge, senior, said she’s going to spend this time drawing and learning calligraphy. This is an excellent skill to practice. You can find many YouTube tutorials with step by step instructions. If you are good, you can maybe start selling them. Doing something you love and making a profit, sounds like a good deal to me.
I know it would be so easy to sit on the couch during this time of isolation, but if you really think about it, when will we ever get another opportunity with this much freedom?
I would like to encourage everyone to spend more time with Jesus.
If you’re like me, I always feel like I never have enough time to really spend with Christ. Now we have been given this amazing opportunity where we have all the time in the word. Spend time in the word, spend time in prayer. Maybe put your phone down, turn off Netflix, and sit outside to enjoy what God has given us. Even in this time of uncertainty, He is still good.
