Staying sane as an extrovert during social distancing

Joshua Boulet, Features and Entertainment Editor

Covid-19, a virus that has quite literally swept the nation. The CDC recommends social distancing and to not be within six feet of other people.

This presents a major problem for the extroverts of society and even a problem for the introverts. With social distancing comes a pretty big sense of loneliness, all of that social interaction people counted on is suddenly gone. So how does this problem get fixed?

Perhaps the most obvious, but still should be mentioned. Just having casual conversations can boost spirits significantly. Granted it isn’t much, but there is some hope for those who want more intimate conversation.

Phone calls

Again, seems obvious, but there is seriously merit to the phone call. Especially in recent times, people are afraid of the phone call. Sure, phone calls are weirder than in person conversation due to the lack of eye contact but still hearing their voice. That’s why, if it’s an option for you, use the alternative:

Video calls

Video calls are basically better phone calls with less multi-tasking. You get to see the wonderful faces of your friends and have conversations. Facetime, Google Hangouts, Duo, Discord or whatever other services exist.

Video calls present the best option for having standard day to day conversations. Given that many of us have spent much too long indoors, there should be a solid bank of conversations to pull from as well.

Playing games together

For many people, playing games online is just “something that other people do.” But with more and more games coming out for the casual crowd, online games are better than ever.

With the power of a screenshare app and a voice call (I personally vouch for Discord), a group of several people can play a game such as Jackbox Party Pack together online. Is it more fun in person? Definitely. But the antics and fun of a real activity still shine through the internet. The bunches of games are great for keeping a group of four or more people entertained for ages.

Watching movies together

If you’re not the party game type or have a smaller group, try watching movies with your friends with an application such as Netflix party. As the title and my buildup may suggest, Netflix party lets a group of people watch anything on Netflix together at once over the internet.

Things may seem rough, and that’s because they are. Remind yourself of the things you’ve got control over, tell your friends you love them and make the most of your time even if choices are limited.
