Humans at NGU: Jensen Beaty, Moving Company Owner
Karson Harsey, Contributing Writer
There are students at NGU currently taking business classes in hopes of starting their own business one day. Then there are those who already have their own business.
Jensen Beaty, a sophomore, owns a moving company with both of his brothers called Beaty Brothers Moving, which they operate in almost all of North Carolina.
Growing up, Beaty and his brothers would help their parents move set pieces and other things for their special events business. Eventually, the three brothers moved to North Carolina but felt like they needed something to do.
Then, someone asked them to help stage houses. Staging involves placing furniture in a house that’s on sale in order to increase its chances of selling.
This led to a series of odd moving jobs and, in 2019, once they gained enough money, the Beaty brothers received their LLC to start their own moving company.
Running a moving company is hard work, according to Beaty. On good days he works 8-10 hours, but sometimes it can run over into 14-16 hours of packing, unpacking, driving, loading and unloading.
Then there’s hygiene. One time, Beaty was moving furniture for the owners of a golden retriever whose fur would get everywhere causing some allergic reactions. When he tried to move their couch, he noticed that it was wet in some places; it was all the business of the retriever.
Besides canine urine, Beaty works around a lot of dust, dirt, and even rat excrement. Additionally, some of the stuff he moves is very heavy, like 1,200-pound gun safes.
Also, as any business owner would know, taxes really stink. Beaty has to pay 15 percent on social security and 15 percent on income taxes (at least he thinks it’s income taxes), all adding up to 30 percent of taxes.
Despite all that, Beaty enjoys being his own boss and working with his two brothers. He hopes to earn enough money someday to buy some real estate and a few apartments or houses with his brothers.
