Humans of NGU: Lauren Hawthorne
Alyssa Waller Associate Writer
Lauren Hawthorne, a junior Elementary Education major, was born and raised here in South Carolina. Lauren has been a student at North Greenville University for a year and a half. She attended FUGE camps for three years and a professor who worked there suggested she go to North Greenville University. The way that the professor taught drew Lauren closer to NGU.
She loves it here at NGU. She explored her options and discovered the education department and realized that this was what God called her to do. After some deliberation, she chose elementary education. Lauren has been here for a year and a half, but she is a junior. Lauren wants to be a teacher because she loves working with children.
In the time that she has been a student here, her favorite class was The Exceptional Learner with Terri Elder. Lauren enjoyed Exceptional Learner because of Mrs. Elder. Her experience in the class lead to Mrs. Elder becoming her favorite class.
Lauren mentions that the materials they learned in the class is really cool and she can relate it to the classroom. After Lauren graduates, she plans on teaching at a Title-1 school for a couple of years and then see what God’s plan is after that.
In her free time, she likes to play volleyball and occasionally softball with her friends as well as getting outside and running. She also enjoys arts and crafts.
Lauren also enjoys the Violin. Playing the violin makes her feel calm. In a way, her hobbies have brought her comfort. The Chronicles of Narnia is Lauren’s favorite book series. She loves how it’s written simply but elegantly. It keeps her wanting to read more. She loved finding what the characters represent.
Last year, Lauren’s Resident Assistant was excellent, sweet and she made sure to care about the lives of the students in the dorm. She likes helping others and her own RA was always kind, so she decided to become an RA.
Through the position of being an RA, she feels like that she can use her ability of helping others. Last semester, she was the RA for both the top and bottom of Simpson. This semester, Lauren is just the RA for the top of Simpson since they got another girl to be the RA for the bottom of Simpson. Lauren mentions that being an RA can be crazy as well as challenging at times, but she loves doing it.
