For North Greenville University junior, Jarred Lavance Miller, K-Pop is a genre of music that he enjoys almost too much.

“K-Pop is amazing.” Miller said with a huge smile on his face, “I love the feel of energy the music gives me no matter the time of day.”

K-Pop is a genre of music that originates from South Korea, hence the name K-Pop. This genre of music is notorious for synthesized music, video art and tightly synchronized dance moves that often give off a certain mood. K-Pop’s claim to fame began in early 2012 when PSY released his global hit “Gangnam Style”. The song, which included a comical dance, would be the first ever to break one billion views on YouTube.

For a young Miller, this is the music of the future

“BTS is currently my favorite K-Pop band, their music is so lively and unique,” Miller said, “I feel like that’s something most artists are lacking nowadays.”

For his father, Gary Miller, this music is not worth listening to.

“It’s trash.” Gary Miller said with a stern but disappointed look on his face. “I don’t get how kids nowadays listen to music like this and think it’s actually good.”

Unfortunately, this is often the case for the older generations. K-pop is a divisive genre, especially in the Miller family.

“I understand my parents hate K-Pop,” Miller said, “But that does not mean I am going to let this be the end of my love for a music type I blend well with.”

Miller does not just like K-Pop music, he even came to NGU to pursue a career in music. Although his major is music education, Miller wants to pursue a career in creating his own K-Pop style music.

In the future, K-Pop will continue its stretch into mainstream culture.
