Jayne Arledge was inducted into the North Greenville University Hall of Fame on Jan. 12, 2019 due to her incredible legacy and efforts for the school.
There was a ceremony that was held in the Hayes Gymnasium in the middle of the men’s and women’s basketball games. She was awarded with recognition and a plaque for earning her spot in the North Greenville University Hall of Fame.
Arledge has been working at North Greenville University for 38 years and is currently an instructor of physical education and also serves as the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA), which looks over the athletics department for the women’s sports. Before she was the SWA, Arledge coached the women’s basketball team and the women’s volleyball team at NGU.
When talking about why she was chosen to be awarded with this honor she said, “I was inducted because of the teams that I’ve had throughout the years. I coached basketball for 36 years. Volleyball for about 20. So just a mix-match of all of those. Conference championships, national tournaments, stuff like that. So, it’s accomplishments throughout the years.” Arledge has had a large impact on the athletics program at North Greenville and continues to do so in her role as the senior woman administrator for the university.
Arledge discussed how it felt to be given such a grand award. She stated, “Oh it was awesome. You know I don’t think there’s any greater honor than to be inducted into a school’s hall of fame. So, I was very privileged and humbled to be thanked and to go along with the people that are already here.”
Arledge has had an incredible journey throughout her coaching years at North Greenville. Some of her accomplishments include guiding the women’s basketball team to the WCJC championships, three NCCAA Southeast Region championships, and four NCCAA tournament appearances including a second-place finish in 2005. She also coached several All-Conference players, seven All-Americans, four All-Tournament players, and six Academic All-Americans. All of these accomplishments on her coaching career show the work ethic and drive that she had during that time as well as the experience going into being the Senior Women’s administrator.
Arledge talked about who she thinks should be awarded with the honor of being inducted into the NGU hall of fame in the years to come. “Well, Jan McDonald already is and I would like to think that all our coaches at some point in time could be inducted because that means that they’ve stayed around awhile, that they’ve had great accomplishments. So, I would be willing for all of them at some point in time hopefully.”
With the milestone passed of being inducted into the school’s hall of fame, Arledge talked about some goals that she hopes to reach with this award under her belt. She said, “I think I’m just going to try and be even an better teacher in P.E. and also really help with, instead of being focused on one sport, maybe focus more on being the administrator for all the sports. Help us go to a higher level.”
Jayne Arledge has become an impactful leader and coach at North Greenville University during her career at the institution and continues in her role as administrator and teacher.
