Here’s what you need to know about the South Carolina Elections

South Carolina state elections are coming up on Nov. 6. Here are some of the candidates running for state-wide office.

South Carolina Governor Election

Henry McMaster: McMaster is the Republican candidate. Some of McMaster’s goals include “stronger investigative authority for the State Ethics Commission,” “expanding workforce-training opportunities for inmates who have completed their sentences and are re-entering the community” and “a 1% rate reduction over five years for all personal income tax brackets.”

James Smith: Smith is the Democratic candidate for governor. His goals include “to ensure that teacher salaries meet or exceed the Southeastern regional average,” “bringing good jobs to the Palmetto State” and “advocating for common sense gun safety.”

SC Secretary of State Election

Mark Hammond: Hammond is the Republican Candidate for Secretary of State. Hammond wishes to continue the growth of business in South Carolina by keeping business filing fees low, saving small business money, and giving businesses the tools they need to be successful.

Melvin Whittenburg: Whittenburn is the Democratic Candidate for Secretary of State. His goals include “implement process improvements and ensure all legislation signed by the Governor,” “provide opportunities to train unlicensed vendors on the requirements and benefits of owning a business license” and “meet annually with notaries to discuss issues and challenges.”

South Carolina Treasurer Election

Rosalyn Glenn: Glenn is the Democratic Candidate for SC Treasurer. Her goals include “providing transparent, accountable and efficient banking, investment, and financial management services for South Carolina State Government.”

Curtis Loftis: Loftis is the Republican Treasurer Candidate. He stands to “protect state funds, fraud and bring transparency and accountability to state government.”

Sarah Work: Work is the Independent Candidate for Treasurer. Work is running for office as an Independent to ensure “the State Treasurer works with legislators from both sides of the aisle to make sure that South Carolina is prepared financially for the future.

Here is some general information on candidates running for office in some of the districts home to North Greenville University students.  

US Congress Election

There are 3 nominees in Congressional District 4, which covers the majority of Greenville and Spartanburg counties, home to many NGU students.

Brandon Brown: Brown is the Democratic Candidate for the 4th Congressional District. Brown aims to “have pro-business policies in the Upstate,” “fight people that want to give our health care system to private companies” and “put resources in place to make school safer and make higher education affordable. 

Guy Furay: Furay is running as the Independent candidate. Furay’s goal is to solve the problems surrounding health insurance, install “policies which would promote new jobs” and “put people before party.”

William Timmons: Timmons is the Republican candidate for Congress. Timmons aims to “stop unsustainable government spending,” “go back to immigration based primarily on merit” and “hold all of those in federal government accountable for their actions.”

The 7th Congressional District is home to many students from the Horry County region and surrounding areas. Here are the candidates for US Congress in District 7. 

Tom Rice: The Republican Candidate for District 7 is “a common-sense conservative Republican representing the 7th district with our South Carolina values and free market principles in Congress.” 

Robert Williams: The Democratic Candidate for District 7 wants to use his platform to insure affordable health care, create higher paying jobs, and gain access to improved education.

District 2 includes all of Lexington, Aiken and Barnwell counties, plus some parts of Orangeburg and Richland county. Here are the candidates for US Congress in District 2.

Sean Carrigan: Carrigan is the Democratic Candidate for District 2. Carrigan wishes to “legalize, tax and regulate medicinal marijuana nationwide,” see “an increase in the minimum wage to $15 an hour” and “implement a ban on federal hiring of people with ties to hate groups. 

Joe Wilson: Wilson is the Republican Candidate for District 2. Wilson aims to “promote a strong national defense promoting peace through strength, creating jobs and limiting the size and scope of the federal government.”

Sonny Narang: Narang is the Independent Candidate for District 2. He aims to “restore net neutrality, fight the opioid crisis and repeal the Dickey Amendment.”

Voter registration ends on Oct. 17, followed by elections on Nov. 6. South Carolina residents can register to vote at info.scvotes.sc.gov.
