“Unbroken: Path to Redemption”: Seeing through a spiritual lens
Rebecca Holmes, Associate Writer
Released on September 14, Harold Cronks dramatic film, Unbroken: Path to Redemption has begun creating a stir among movie goers. According to movie goer, Coleen Souther, Your heart will break and your heart will soar. This is beautiful true story!
Adapted from the original Laura Hillebrand book, Harold Cronks Path to Redemption picks up where Angelina Jolies Unbroken left off. Path to Redemption follows the aftermath of Zamperinis 47 days at sea as well as his time as a prisoner of war. It picks up after he returns home to California to resume his normal life.
Even though his family and friends all treat him like a hero wherever he goes, Zamperini struggles to overcome the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. As he tours the country encouraging citizens to buy war bonds, he becomes more and more self-medicated through alcohol.
Suddenly the plot brightens when, during his forced furlough in Miami, Zamperini meets a young woman named Cynthia. They quickly fall in love, marry and try to settle down back in California. Zamperini even starts training again in hopes that he could qualify for the 1948 Olympic Games.
Zamperinis story turns grim when a severe injury shatters his triumphant return to the Olympic Games. He then begins to struggle to find work since during his service he didnt complete a college degree. As he began to drink more, the pressures in his life were mounting. His lifestyle was beginning to strain his new family, which included a little girl.
Looking at everything in his life, Zamperini blames God for his trials and suffering. Eventually, Zamperinis burden is lifted through his interaction with Billy Grahams sermons.
Through this film Cronk excels at juxtaposing how the same defiant resolution that saved Zamperinis life during the war was now the key thing preventing him from healing his soul.
Unbroken: Path to Redemptionoffers viewers a much-needed look at the spiritual aspects of Zamperinis condition that completes the action-filled story line of JoliesUnbroken.
