This Summer in Sports: 5 Major Events You May Have Missed

Nick Aldrich, Staff Writer

The world of sports is always changing, and with so many sports to watch it can be hard to keep up to date on each one. Here’s a quick refresher on some of the events you may have missed out on. Here are five of the biggest sporting events that happened this summer, according to topendsports.com’s 2018 Sporting Events Calendar.

NBA Finals

Once again, this year’s NBA Finals featured both the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors for the fourth year in a row. This time however, the Warriors asserted their dominance as the uncontested best team in the NBA by sweeping the Cavs 4-0. This event prompted Lebron to leave Cleveland for a second time, this time heading to the Lakers in hopes of snatching the title from the Warriors in 2019. But with Golden State’s recent recruitment of DeMarcus Cousins, that seems very unlikely.

FIFA World Cup

Once every four years, the FIFA World Cup is held in various places all over the globe. Teams from all nations come together to compete in a huge soccer (or football for those who aren’t American) tournament. Without question the biggest sporting event of the year, people tend to get really hyped up to see their country compete. This year France pulled out a 4-2 victory against Croatia, marking the country’s second title.

PGA Tour U.S. Open

The annual PGA U.S. Open, not to be confused with the tennis U.S. Open of the same name, was once again held this year in June. It is open to both amateurs and professionals. This year, Brooks Koepka won the tournament in 281 strokes. Koepka would later go on to win the PGA Championship in August, cementing himself as one of golf’s top contenders.

Stanley Cup Playoffs

The NHL’s annual playoff tournament kicked in May and continued on into June. After a tight 4-3 set of games between the Washington Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning, the capitals went on to win the playoffs against the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1. Shockingly, this is the first title that the team has one, making it a historic season for the Capitals.

Wimbledon Tennis Championship

Also known as “The Lawn Tennis Championship,” the Wimbledon Championship is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in all of tennis. It’s the third of the Grand Slam tournaments, followed only by the U.S Open, which is going on now. There are 17 categories in which players can compete, ranging from normal singles matches to wheelchair quad doubles. However, the main categories are Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles. Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber won the Men’s and Women’s singles respectively, while Mike Bryan and Jack Sock won the Men’s doubles and Barbora Krejckova and Katerina Siniakova won the Women’s doubles.
