Hanna Hawkins: First athlete to 100
Sydney Taylor, Staff Writer
Hanna Hawkins, junior, scored her hundredth career goal on March 31, in a home game against Chowan University. Hawkins is the first athlete for NGU women’s and men’s lacrosse to achieve a hundred goals throughout her athletic career.
Hawkins led the Crusaders in points her freshman year with 31 goals and five assists, earning the title of Offensive Player of the Year.
Hawkins had a different experience than most growing up. She was born in China and left outside one of the orphanage’s gates. She was approximated to be just a couple of days old when found. Hawkins was given the name Wan Jinlu, which means colorful fortune. She stayed in the orphanage for 15 months until she was adopted and moved to America.
Hawkins grew up in Simpsonville, S.C. with her two other adopted sisters and went to Hillcrest High School. There she picked up the sport of lacrosse. She started her freshman year and played all four years. She was named Most Improved her junior year and then chosen to play on the National Team for South Carolina.
She signed to play at Greenville as a defender but was moved to the opposite side of the field to play attack. She set many goals for herself as an attack player. She wanted to successfully pull off a behind the back shot on goal, which she has accomplished. Hawkins also made it her goal to be the first person in program history with a hundred career goals, which she has accomplished as well.
Hawkins and the Crusaders have three more games left for their season including Mars Hill University, Barton College and number two seed, Mount Olive University.
